Colostomy, a surgical procedure where part of the colon is brought through the abdominal wall to create an opening for waste elimination, is often required in cases of colorectal cancer, traumatic injuries, or certain inflammatory diseases (Eze et al., 2024). While this life-saving surgery improves the quality of life for patients, it often presents long-term challenges related to stoma care, including skin irritation, infection, and emotional distress (Akinyemi et al., 2023). For colostomy patients, proper stoma care is essential for avoiding complications, ensuring comfort, and promoting overall well-being.
Nurses play a central role in educating colostomy patients about stoma care, which includes training on how to clean and care for the stoma, manage the colostomy bag, and handle potential complications (Bello et al., 2023). However, despite the importance of nursing interventions in this area, there is limited research into how nurses in Sokoto State healthcare facilities specifically manage stoma care education and its impact on patient outcomes. This study seeks to explore the role of nurses in educating colostomy patients and to identify the challenges they face in providing effective care.
Stoma care education is a vital component of post-surgical recovery for colostomy patients. However, many patients experience difficulties in managing their stoma, leading to physical discomfort, emotional distress, and increased healthcare visits (Odeyemi et al., 2024). Nurses are tasked with educating patients on stoma care, but there is a lack of focused research on the specific role nurses play in stoma care education within Sokoto State healthcare facilities. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in stoma care education and the barriers they face in effectively implementing educational programs for colostomy patients.
This study will focus on nurses working in Sokoto State healthcare facilities and will specifically explore their role in educating colostomy patients. Limitations may include regional variations in healthcare infrastructure and nurses’ differing levels of experience in stoma care education.
